Heart in Pieces

Steve had entered the Medical Lab just to check it out and froze when he saw Chloe lying on a bed. He hurried forward feeling his heart twinge, "Chloe are you all right?" He asked worriedly as he neared her.

Chloe turned around to see Steve headed towards her and momentarily panicked, she opened her mouth to say she was fine and then froze as her mouth refused to cooperate. She touched her throat nervously and shook her head sadly, wishing that she could say something.

Steve winced when he saw her saw her shake her head, why wasn't she saying anything? He wondered. "You can't talk?" He guessed as he sat in the seat next to her.

Chloe nodded sadly and then looked at him curiously, she was wondering why he had come into the Medical Lab and for the second time she wished she had telepathy.

Steve noticed her curious gaze and was struck by her soft green eyes, one could get lost in them he thought absently. "Um are you wondering why I'm here?" He asked, knowing that he sounded like an idiot.

She nodded and stared up at him silently amused, he was cute when he was nervous she thought. She pushed herself up and smiled at him, this was another moment where she wished she had her voice

Steve smiled back at her, her smile was beautiful he thought and was glad that he was seeing it. What is Bruce doing letting someone like her get away? He wondered before he coughed. "I actually was getting a feel for the Mansion and I wanted to check every place that I hadn't yet." He admitted. He frowned as he looked at her, "Wait Chloe is the baby ok?" He asked with concern.

Chloe hung her head at his question and then shook her head, she could feel tears start up and before she knew it she was crying mutely. She had failed the baby....she hadn't been strong enough to fight Braniac she thought bitterly

Steve reached out and took her hand and then before he could change his mind he got up on the bed next to her. He pulled her gently against him and let her cry into his chest, it was then that he realized just how tiny she was. He gently rubbed her back as she cried.

Eventually her cries subsided, she started to feel the weight of the whole day start to descend on her and she slowly fell into a deep sleep. Her last thought was this is nice before she wiped out.

Steve had never had anyone fall asleep on him before so he was slightly in shock, he adjusted her in his arms so that way they were both comfortable. He didn't want to wake her up if he moved so he stayed in one position with his arm draped around her and holding her close.

Johnny was wondering around the hero house again. It was fun doing that without permission. He wandered into the med lab and saw Cap with Chloe.


"What's going on here?" Johnny asked curiously.

Steve looked up when he saw Johnny and slowly maneuvered Chloe off of him and back on the bed before getting up to address Johnny. Without saying a word he guided Johnny out into the hall way, "Johnny I'm not exactly sure what happened to Chloe because she can't say anything. What I do know though is that....she lost the baby and something happened to her." He said with worry as he pinched his nose.

Johnny took a deep breath as he suddenly felt a weight on his chest. He didn't understand. She was pregnant. She told him that. How could the baby be gone? Johnny turned and looked to the door and calmly waked in and sat in a chair next to Chloe. Steve had followed him in.


Johnny spoke softly so as not to wake Chloe. "I need to talk to her. When she wakes up I'm going to be here to ask her what happened." Johnny gulped as he looked at her stomach and cringed. He felt his heart constrict that his dead child was in there.

Steve nodded in understanding, "Just don't get her upset all right?" He asked before he turned and left staying out in the hallway just in case.

Chloe slowly came too and froze when she saw Johnny sitting in the seat next to her, he was looking at her stomach with a lost expression on his face. She felt guilty then but why was beyond her, she slowly sat up and waited until he was looking at her before she tried to speak. "Brainiac.......forced the child out of me." She said slowly as her mind worked double time on trying to get the words out.

Johnny nodded. He wasn't happy but he wasn't angry either. He set his hand on Chloe's. "It's ok. I understand... sort of. I don't know about this Braniac but I know you didn't do this to hurt me so I think we can move past this. If you need me I'm here for you that doesn't rescind just because the baby is gone."

Chloe nodded and bit her lip, "Thank...you." She said and winced, she hated how slow and dumb she sounded. Her wrists were still aching from where they had been rubbed raw and it hurt to have his hand over hers.

Johnny saw her wince and looked down. Her wrists were rubbed raw. Johnny pulled his hand away. "Let me help you with that." Johnny went and got some ointment and bandages. He began to gently apply the ointment to her wrists. This should help sooth and numb her wrists and start them healing faster. He then pulled out the bandages. They needed to be out of the air. I he wrapped them tight enough then they shouldn't hurt unless someone were to rip at them.

Chloe watched him get to work and was shocked at how gentle he was being, once he had wrapped them up with the bandages she smiled gratefully at him. He was certainly acting an one-eighty then his usual self, she quietly admitted that she liked the change. "Again thank you." She said quietly, the words weren't so hard to get out now. "So what brought you to the Medical Lab?" She asked as she tilted her head to study him.

"Just wandering around." Johnny shrugged. "It's fun walking around 'enemy territory' without permission." He smiled at her.

She let out a laugh at his words, "Well it is fun to go to forbidden territory." She said teasingly and then inwardly felt like smacking herself, she was letting loose dirty innuendo's without meaning too.

Johnny practically fell backwards laughing. "Don't give me any ideas Chloe. I'll run with them." He grinned jokingly at her.

Chloe gave him a fake dark look before lightly hitting him, "If you do, you'll have me to deal with." She said with a small smile on her face.

Johnny chuckled and shook his head. "No ofence but I would be much more scared to answer to Amanda."
