The Flicker of Flame

Bruce sat in his tree, watching the sun rise over horizon with its beautiful array of colors coursing through the darkened sky. Bruce couldn't or wouldn't sleep, the choice he couldn't make on his own will alone. He stared into the light, he felt weak. Something he hadn't felt in a long while. Jason's death played in his mind, the boy knew his death was coming and yet he sat there and taunted it? It was so... Jason like of him. He kept his quiet thoughts to himself, trying to block out Chloe as much as he could. He needed the privacy to think about a fallen comrade... and son.

Chloe watched Bruce brood up in the tree, she wanted to be there for him but she had a feeling that he needed this privacy. Once again someone close to him had died and Chloe should have been able to save him.....she hung her head. "I should have been better." She whispered angrily at herself, she didn't want Bruce to hear her beating herself up over this.

Bruce could hear, of course. She wasn't too far away, 'There was nothing you could do.' He thought to hear, he didn't feel like opening his mouth. Everything just seemed, so surreal. He didn't feel as hurt as he did last time Jason died, nor would he let it. Bruce had become a introvert for ten years after Jason's death. He wouldn't let that happen again, not with as many people counting on him as there was right now.

Chloe bit her lip, maybe not... she sent back to him, after all she was a healer.....she should have been able to heal him. She sat down on the bench and rubbed her face she didn't want to send any thoughts to Bruce....not when she was blaming herself for Jason's death that would only make him upset.

'I've come up with a theory of why you couldn't save him.' He said bluntly, his mind coming up with a conclusion above all others.

Chloe frowned, what? she asked, she was curious to hear Bruce's idea on this.

'Because... I believe Jason accepted his death. I believe your power can only heal the willing, which would explain its uses on people that want to live. But not on the few that don't.' He ended his thoughts there, sighing out. He shouldn't be sitting there, brooding like he always did. He should be down there, making sure Chloe was okay.

Chloe frowned, that makes sense....I am sorry though Bruce she sent to him, she wasn't sure how she was supposed to react.

'It fine.' He cut off their connection once more, preferring to jump onto the ground next to her, "There's nothing either of us could've done." Bruce said, honestly. The honest hurt, but it was true. Death came and sometimes loved ones were taken. He shut his eyes lightly, sitting next to Chloe on the bench.

Chloe took his hand and squeezed it gently, "No....you're right." She said sadly as much as she hated admitting that.

Bruce moved his hand to cover Chloe's. He looked at her before his blue eyes moved to the horizon, "I think we just need to end the day, think about what's happened and move on... Jason will always be there, no matter what." Bruce whispered.

Chloe nodded, "If that's what you want then all right." She said and stared into the horizon as well, it was almost sinful how something as lovely as this should still be here on such a sad day. Yet...it was almost as if he was sending his own farewell in his own way...

Bruce stood up, his hand still on Chloe's, "Want to go to bed? It's been a long night." He whispered out.

Chloe followed suit, "Sleep sounds really good right now so yes." She said in agreement and glanced back one last time to see the view before she followed Bruce inside.
